The Purpose of this Blog

The goal of this blog is to provide education and bring about higher awareness about Down syndrome. It is to share that life with Down syndrome (DS) is not scary, horrible, or to be feared.

My experience comes from raising my daughter, Nebraska Larae (Braska), born November 2006 with Down syndrome.
The posts on this blog are related in some way to life with DS or disability, and they are reposted here from my other family blogs. There are links to those blogs in the margin on the right side of this blog if you would like to visit them directly.

Thank you for coming by.

Do you know your letters?? [Down syndrome, speech]

Here’s my last movie for you to watch. Here’s the first and the second if you missed them. At least until I make some more!  This was when I was working on my letters and numbers… you can say them along with me if you want to practice, too.

Sayin’ my animals [Down syndrome, speech]

Here’s another movie from last night.  There’s still one more movie for me to show you later when I work on my letters and numbers.  If you didn’t see the first one, it’s over here.

This one was when me and Mommy were looking at pictures on the computer of animals and stuff.

(Mommy note: I have been told more than once that I need to show Braska’s mistakes along with her victories in order to show a balanced—more “real”—version of her skills and abilities.  I won’t digress too much about my responce to that thought, but I will just say that this video has both correct and incorrect answers.  Hope that helps her seem “real.”)

Windy Weekend, Part 2

On Friday, we got up and went to Aunt Karol’s house.  Me and KiKi played while Mommy and Aunt Karol worked on the computers for some neat things that we’ll tell you about later.

The big kids got home from school early, so we got to do some fun things with them.  We went on a walk to see Laynee’s hee-hee’s.  Well, we went to see them on Thursday, too, and they came right up and bumped into me and everything!!  I was really afraid of them.  And KiKi was too.  But Mommy wanted us to go back again and try to say hello to the horses again. So this time Jade took us over in a fun wagon!

Moise has his own wheels, so he didn’t ride with us. Isn’t he handsome?!

Me and KiKi don’t like grass, remember?  It’s itchy and it makes me very upset to touch it or walk on it.  But look at KiKi! She got out of the wagon for a little bit!

I did a little trick, though. I put my hands up and said, “Weeeee!” I was very brave!

I don’t think those horses like me as much as they liked Laynee. They looked at me kind of mean, I think.  It scared me a little…even though they were in their rooms this time.

(Mommy note: I want to make clear that Jade was NOT forcing Braska to be miserable of her own accord.  She was actually pleading for the moms to stop terrorizing the child by making her be near the animals for pictures.  Jade’s the nice one, to be sure!)

There’s also a goat there, and it was pretty scary, too.

KiKi didn’t get as scared as me, but she still wouldn’t touch it.

Then we got on the bouncy for some silly times.  Jade bounced us nice, and it was really fun!

Here’s a movie of us bouncing with Jade and Moise…

They have fun swings in the back, too, but Mommy forgot to take pictures when we were swinging.

And this is Laynee’s tree…

More pictures coming up!  And they are very special with some fancy dresses!!

Sing along, Take 2

Some of you could see my videos from Saturday, but some couldn't get them to work. So I'll try a different way to show you. Can you see it now??
(Movie clip below for Reader readers...)

(Mommy note: It's not so much "singing" as toddler rapping of sorts, but the fact that she can string several words together on command, and often without any prompting at all...that's exciting for us. And to be fair to Braska, this was late in the evening, and her enunciation always gets a little lazy as she gets tired... but it's still neat to hear!)

Ohhhhhh…jingle bells!

I’ve got a bunch of pictures to show you from our really fun Christmas times, but Mommy’s busy cleaning up so she can’t help me do pictures right now.  So here’s a little song we did last night that you can listen to until the pictures are ready.

We sing it every day at school, and it’s my favorite!  I ask Mommy to sing it sometimes in the car and sometimes before bed and sometimes when I’m eating and sometimes when I’m in the bath.  It’s a good song!  Oh, and Mommy said to tell you that I kinda get silly and loud, so get ready to cover your ears!  But sing along!!!

Braska: 31 for 21: Silly girl walking

I’m working hard on my walking with only holding one hand of Mommy’s and taking steps by myself sometimes too!  Here’s a movie we made at Grandma C’s and PaPaw’s on Sunday.   I was showing off a little, but everybody kept cheering for me!

Braska: Grammy’s names

My name is Braska, and KiKi’s name is KiKi. But Grammy calls us different names. I’ve been saying them alot, so we made a little movie for Grammy.
(I’m a sweetie peach, and KiKi is a sugar plum.)

Braska: Bathtime Practice

KiKi took a bath with me yesterday for the first time, like for real. She didn’t have her own tub or a chair or anything! She took a bath just like me, just sitting in the tub.

While we were in there, I practiced a few things like letters and biting on my yellow letters (it’s supposed to help me eat, Mommy says).

So here’s a little movie to show you some fun stuff…

Kinlee did her own movie of her stuff on her page if you wanna see it, too.

Meet Lily

Doing some random searching tonight I came across a link to Braska's blog from Lily's blog, where I found this video.

Lily,  you're a doll... and such an encouragement to me today!

Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas

They've done a pretty great video... worth a watch. There's something different about it from others that might be similar...something I can't put my finger on, but I like it.

Braska: Home FUN therapy

I had the most bestest fun today!

I love to play on Mommy and Daddy's great big bed, but I'm not allowed to be up there without someone to watch me because Mommy says I don't watch the edges like I should.  But that's ok because it's way more fun when Daddy plays with me!

Miss A lets me climb all over the big cloud pillow thing at school, and to practice at home, we put lots of big pillows all over the bed and I climb on them.  It is SO much fun!!

(Mommy note: The "headboard" to our bed is a mattress, turned on it's side.  It's a longer story than you want to read, but it actually works really nicely, and it fits perfectly with our king-sized bed.  You'll see why this info is helpful... back to Braska.)

So today we were playing on the bed after we got up from nap, and I wanted to get up on the higher part of the bed.  And I found a NEW fun thing to do...

Here, I'll show you in a little movie.

What do you think? You wanna come to my house and try it?? Come on over!

Braska: Working hard with Miss A

Sometimes I get to go to my school to do PT with Miss A. I really love those days! It's so much fun to play in the big room there. There's lots of climbing things, and I just love to climb. But I always start by banging on this part and getting all ready to go.

PT1

Then I like to swing. Sometimes the swing is like my swing at home, sometimes it's a big hard board that I sit or crawl on, but this time it was different. I didn't know what to do at first, but then it was kind of fun.
PT3 PT4 PT5

Miss A put me on the thing called a scooter. She and Mommy didn't think I'd be able to do it since my arms are not strong at all. But I did it! I had to work REALLY hard, but I did it.
PT2

Here's a super short movie of me showing off on the scooter.

Braska: Me 'n Jack: Olive Garden

Jack and his Mommy came over last week to play. I was still in my p-jammies, but he didn't even care.

First I showed him my toy shelf.

"Here, hold this."
braskajack6

Here's a video of us playing...make sure you watch to the end (it's short!) because we showed our mommies a new cute trick.

And this is a movie that made Mommy happy, because we're playing together. Like both of us playing with the same toy at the same time and not fighting about it or something like that.

When it was lunchtime, we went to one of our favorite places. It's called the Olive Garden, but I didn't see a garden.

Braska: Sliding at the play place

We've been going to the mall alot so I can have fun at the play place. On Sunday I took Daddy to show him where it is and to show him what I can do. Just a few days before that I was there and learned how to slide. So Daddy and I did it a bunch of times! I told Mommy to take a movie so you could see too. We're gonna keep going a lot because it's good practice for me to climb on stuff and crawl around with the other kids!

Exciting night!

Pardon the interruption into your regular evening, but we have something to share!!

Daddy gets the credit for this one. He had her in the bed for cuddles and snuggles, and in a matter of 15 minutes, she's got it down pat!!! She's going around now saying, "Name! Braska! (Ba-ka)"

I'm always hesitant to "brag" on her too much, for fear of offending or something to those who struggle... as that's a real thing in the world of delays...but I am so proud of this girl! More speech news soon, but I just had to throw this up and cheer for my girl!

Braska: Girly words

We are just being home these last few days. Grammy is here with me, and we are having all kinds of fun. Sometimes I sit with Daddy too and say hi to Kinlee.

I've also been working on saying new words and making my old words easier to hear. Checkout my newest one... it's what we put on my face everyday to keep it soft and pretty.

Braska: Walkin', babies, and lookin' good

I've been doing more practice with my walker. I like it alot! I even go and tell Mommy that I want to take walks. I tell her "Wa-wa-walk!" But sometimes my PT makes me do it more than I want. Mommy says it's her job and it helps me, but I give her sassy looks anyway. This was from when she came on Thursday.

Here's a movie of me practicing with Daddy. It's a little dark because it was close to bedtime.

I still don't like to sit in my Elmo chair alot, but I do like it to be right next to me. Mommy thinks I'm silly. I just like to sit by him while I'm watching my shows.

Saturday morning we had to get ready for going out and I had a quick bath. I found a little mirror in the tub that I never noticed before. Maybe Mommy will get me a bigger one.

We got dressed and ready. I got to wear a new jacket that my friend Larkin passed on to me after Sophie was too big for it. Thanks Larkin and Sophie!

We went to Auntie Janice's baby shower, or I guess it was really for Baby Xander who will be here soon, next month right after Kinlee's coming. Xander is so lucky! He got a whole bunch of cool stuff!
Shay even got neat presents, too. She's gonna be a big sister like me. Miss Cheryl helped her with her things. Her favorite was an Ariel doll. She LOVES Ariel!

I didn't get a nap before, so I fell asleep and took a long nap while everyone was eating and playing games. It was comfy!

On Sunday, I got to wear a dress that I got last year. I finally got big enough for it! It's pink and soft with little sparkly snowflakes. It even matched my BabyLegs, and they kept me toasty warm for church.

Braska: Getting ready for Idol!

Here at our house we always watch American Idol from the beginning to the end. I like all the music, and Mommy and Daddy like to make guesses on who will win. I love to sing and listen to songs and Mommy has been singing songs to me since I was a tiny baby, so we do songs every day. We're getting ready for Idol to start soon, so we've been singing extra!

Last night, I thought I would do my first movie of singing time. I was in a pretty silly mood and didn't want to be still, but Mommy thought I should let you see anyway.

This is the song I know the best, Jesus Loves Me, but it's not my best showing of it, that's for sure.

And this is my favorite song from my FAVORITE show... Blue's Clues!!! Usually I can say Blue's Clues really nice and show the hands like Steve does, but I didn't feel like it when Mommy got the camera out. But the Mail song is always fun! (Mommy even got a word wrong but I knew my part!)
