The Purpose of this Blog

The goal of this blog is to provide education and bring about higher awareness about Down syndrome. It is to share that life with Down syndrome (DS) is not scary, horrible, or to be feared.

My experience comes from raising my daughter, Nebraska Larae (Braska), born November 2006 with Down syndrome.
The posts on this blog are related in some way to life with DS or disability, and they are reposted here from my other family blogs. There are links to those blogs in the margin on the right side of this blog if you would like to visit them directly.

Thank you for coming by.

Braska: Catch-up: Visiting Matthew

Wow, we are way behind!  I’m going to try to put up some more pictures and stories this week if Mommy has time to help me.  We have been super busy running all around.  This week might be better, I hope.

A couple weeks ago I went to see my new friend Matthew at his house.  He lives in another town so we took a little trip in the car to get there.  We stopped to see Mommy’s friend Miss Lainie and her baby Sophia before we went to Matthew’s house, too.

When we got there, I had made a messy diaper and it was extra messy, so there was alot of stuff to do right away to get cleaned up. (Sorry Miss Ria!!) But when I got all clean and new clothes on, we had lots of fun!

He has a really neat place to sit and play with balls and all kinds of toys.  I liked it alot.

He is a pretty funny guy!

He liked my glasses, too.  Everyone likes to touch my glasses!

The mommies ordered pizza when it was lunch time.  I helped call.  “Hi, can I have a medium barbecue chicken pizza, please?  Deliver it to Matthew’s house. Thanks.”

We played in the kitchen with lots of his letters on the floor.  We kind of made a big mess in there.  Oh, and Matthew showed me that he has a foot, too.

I’m so glad we got to go play with Matthew and Miss Ria.  Hope we can see them again soon!

Braska: Catch-up: Visit from the famous LC!

On Tuesday, last week I got the best surprise!  My blog friend LC came to my house!  She's like a superstar in our house, and I couldn't believe she was just right there!  She even brought her Mommy and two grandmas!

"Is that really LC?!?"  I think we felt a little shy at first.LCbraska3

Then she started to grin and be silly. I still wasn't sure about it.

I showed her my favorite stacking cups.

We chatted for a while on the floor.

And then we tried to be real still so KiKi wouldn't see us.

LC is so cute!! She was all happy and is way better at smiling for pictures than I am.

At the end, we took a bunch of pictures of all of us. But LC took one all by herself when she grabbed Mommy's camera.  She's pretty good at that too, don't you think?!

You can read on LC's blog about her visit with us. And Mommy did a short story about it too.

Thanks for coming LC!!!  Can't wait to see you next month!!

Meet Lily

Doing some random searching tonight I came across a link to Braska's blog from Lily's blog, where I found this video.

Lily,  you're a doll... and such an encouragement to me today!

Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas

They've done a pretty great video... worth a watch. There's something different about it from others that might be similar...something I can't put my finger on, but I like it.

Braska: Home FUN therapy

I had the most bestest fun today!

I love to play on Mommy and Daddy's great big bed, but I'm not allowed to be up there without someone to watch me because Mommy says I don't watch the edges like I should.  But that's ok because it's way more fun when Daddy plays with me!

Miss A lets me climb all over the big cloud pillow thing at school, and to practice at home, we put lots of big pillows all over the bed and I climb on them.  It is SO much fun!!

(Mommy note: The "headboard" to our bed is a mattress, turned on it's side.  It's a longer story than you want to read, but it actually works really nicely, and it fits perfectly with our king-sized bed.  You'll see why this info is helpful... back to Braska.)

So today we were playing on the bed after we got up from nap, and I wanted to get up on the higher part of the bed.  And I found a NEW fun thing to do...

Here, I'll show you in a little movie.

What do you think? You wanna come to my house and try it?? Come on over!

Braska: I know P and T!

Yesterday I went to school for PT with Miss A.  Miss J came too so she could see how much I talk when I'm playing in the PT room.  (I don't talk very much with Miss J.  They don't know why and I'm not sayin'.)

I just love the PT room!!! I wish I had one of those at home!  Today we did 2 kinds of swings, and I did a good job staying on when it was really hard.  I crawled under things and went through the big tunnel and worked really hard to crawl over the big cloud pillow thing.

There's a basket of big letters in the PT room and I always find them and get them out.  I really like letters and numbers, and I like to say what they are.  When we go in the PT room, there are number cards on the floor and I pick them up and tell Miss A what number is on them.  Today we got the basket of letters and I stood up at the rock wall and put them on there.  When Miss A gave me the letters, I told her what they were and then we put them on the wall.

(Mommy note: Braska blew us away yesterday at her PT session.  She just goes crazy in the motor room at her school.  The sessions we do there are amazing, because the kid just is ON when we are in that environment.

She has not been showing off her speech and signing skills for Miss J during ST sessions, so they worked it out for Miss J to come and hang out at the PT session to see how Braska does when she's all hopped up on excitement fumes.

She started out a little slower than usual, but she warmed up to her very loud and animated mode very quickly.  When they went to the rock wall, Braska identified more letters by sight than I would have *ever* thought she could.  They weren't in order of the alphabet--she knows that order, so her giving names then is not as surprising--just in random order.  Miss A showed her the letter, Braska told her what it was, and then she put it on the wall.  I wish I'd have video taped the whole thing...I was stunned.

Miss J made a full list of all her words and letters during the session, and it was LONG.  But for that section of identifying letters, the ones I remember are these: H, J, G, E, L, K, S, Z, U, P, F, O, T.  I might have some wrong there, and I think there were more, but I can't remember which ones.  Still, Miss J tells us that this type of verbal identification of letters correctly is way ahead of Braska's age, DS or not! How crazy is that?!?  It was just so exciting to watch her do something I had no idea she could do!

I hope to have some new video very soon of some of her speech and signing. She's LOVING Baby Signing Time again these days!!)

What lit up my day

I got a visit from this totally huggable, perfectly joyful, amazingly flexible beauty, along with her hot mama and super cool grandmas.

There are lots more pics... I could have cuddled on this little one for at least a few more hours, no doubt. You should all be very jealous! Thanks for stopping, LC, Courtney, and company!!! We'll see you again soon.

Braska: Another new friend!!

Today we went to have lunch with a new friend that Mommy found from around the blog world.  Matthew and his mommy and daddy don't live too far from us, so we met in the middle.  I'm pretty tired, so I'll just show you some pictures that we took today of all of us.  Don't forget that you can click on the picture to make it bigger and see it better.

It was nice to meet you Matthew and Mr. Bill and Miss Ria!  Hope we can play together soon!
